March 29th marks the one year deadline for the Men’s Central Jail (MCJ) Closure Report. A year later, we are still waiting to see measurable change. On July 7, 2020, the LA County BOS committed to closing MCJ within a year and to fully fund the Alternatives to Incarceration (ATI) Roadmap. With a little over three months left, the county is running out of time to deliver on their promises, and in fact, the population at MCJ has increased.
One year into the pandemic, there is still an urgent need for decarceration. Men’s Central Jail has a long history of harm, and keeping it open for even one day more means that the Board of Supervisors is allowing our taxpayer dollars to be used to fund the continued harm of our community members. Now more than ever, we need decarceration, community based systems of care, and healing. The county has the power to make strides towards these goals by closing Men's Central Jail and fully funding Measure J. Let's join together and keep the Board of Supervisors accountable to these mandates!
This is an in-person event. Wear comfortable shoes and double mask. It's also highly encouraged that folks bring signs! If you can make extra signs for other people to use, even better! JusticeLA is calling for "Care Not Cages," "Close MCJ," and "Fully Fund Measure J" if you need any creative inspiration.
